Skin Is In

No one ever told me what a key role shoes play in the meet scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Yes, I just saw it for the first time. Shameful, I know). Holly Golightly, flitting around her bare Manhattan apartment, immediately asks Paul Varjak, “Would you be a darling and look under the bed and see if you can find a pair of alligator shoes?”

She stops her narrative about going to visit a mob boss in Sing Sing prison only to instruct Paul, “Black.” He finds one shoe. She pauses again, fishes the matching kitten heel out of a decorative basket and says to the shoe, “There you are you sneak.” I should have known I was in for a good love story when Holly spoke directly to her shoes and Paul was nothing more than fascinated. The entire movie still has me in dreamy reflection (minus the stunningly offensive role of Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi, but there’s no protesting that now). So thanks to Holly, I’ve got my eyes on the Fall by Franco Sarto. They’re not quite alligator skin, but they are croc-embossed patent leather with a dainty 2 inch heel. I could pair these with anything and look refined. They’ve inspired me to adopt one of Holly’s more profound and declarative fashion philosophies, “All the (Sing Sing) visitors make an effort to look their best. It’s only fair.”
