Tell me about it, Stud

Listed among the summer trends on blog site Fashion Rising (http://www.fashionising.com/trends/b–Shoes-in-2009-Shoe-Trends-for-SpringSummer-2009-1488.html) are studs and chains. “If bondage / fetish clothing was a trend on the Spring/Summer 2009 runways, it’s no surprise that footwear has found the same inspirations. Studs, spikes and chains are some of the fetish-esque details that are finding their way onto shoes for 2009.” It’s a far cry from the suede-y, fringe-y, moccasin-inspired hippy sandals that generally come out in droves during warm weather.
These luxe, spike-heeled and edgy sandals (like Balmain’s studded pair worn here by Jennifer Connoly at the premiere of “He’s Just Not That Into You”) are a far cry from music festival-casual. But the two — freewheelin’ concert girl and fashionista — don’t have to be at odds. Blogger Celebitchy (http://www.celebitchy.com/45817/gwyneth_paltrows_ugly_fashion_goop_suggestions/) ran a series of images of Gwyneth Patrow (from Paltrow’s own GOOP newsletter) in those coveted, chain-embellished Isabel Marant suede boots (http://www.isabelmarant.tm.fr/) paired with boho embroidered and crocheted dresses from the Marant line.
Love the tough look of chains but can’t afford the $1400 price tag for the Marant style? Fashion bloggers like Fashion Rules! (http://fashionrules.com/2009/04/isabel-marant-boots/) offer up a DIY approach using vintage boots and materials like “rhinestone necklaces, leather rope, velvet, fringe, thin waist belts” for a personalized touch.
Self Magazine put its own spin on the stud trend in the April online Style Secrets section (http://www.self.com/beauty/blogs/selfstylesecrets/2009/04/index3.html). Editor Audra decked a pair of $39.95 Vans with square brass studs (think BeDazzler! minus the acid wash jacket/county fair connotation).
Trend-tracker A to Z Central (http://www.azcentral.com/style/directory/articles/loveit2.html) ran a poll on the popularity of rocker-chic studs: 58-percent voted “Love it!”
Like the trend but shy away from heavy metal? Studs don’t have to be subversive. Enzo Angiolini’s Rojo sandal (http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/55658522/c/574.html) features rounded gold studs (more cute than dangerous) and come in cheery shades of orange and purple.
