“Boots” for Booty

Recently, someone – who may or may not be me, I confess nothing – made their first booty call.

At the advanced age of twenty-something — which too is a slight fudge – you’d think she would have done this earlier in her life. Sadly, she hadn’t. She is but a shy gal, and tends to go for the dominant boy types.

betsyjohnsonroseheelsBut to be the “inviter” and have the guy come to her – because she was, well, feeling randy – ended up being the sexiest feeling she had ever experienced.

Again, not me. Not admitting to a thing.

However, as I am a girl, and know that the power is in the heel – I informed my friend that what she must do is wear the right shoes. Shoes set a mood – sexy, powerful, dominant – as in Betsey Johnson Kazan stilettos. Honestly, in magenta suede who doesn’t think of booty? Obviously.

My favorite part is the elegant flower at the vamp -because even if we are crossing into wilder territory, we are still ladies! And it’s ever-important to remind our men of that as much as possible.

All Dressed Up and No Place To Go

So, try to follow this story from the beginning.

I am total best buds with an indie band (in a non Almost Famous sort of way). This has been true for nearly a decade. About three years ago, one of the guys in the band started to date this awesome girl, who went on to become my BFF. She, then, introduced her other BFF (since like college), to one of the other guys in the band, who instantly hit it off. This couple is now getting married.

betsyvillepaulineObviously, I assumed I would be at the wedding. Hell, I was the one the dude called for hair advice before his first date with this girl. Clearly, I am significant.

As it is to be a fairly non-traditional morning ceremony in a nearby park, it will be less formal – but still a summer wedding! I had the dress all picked out, and new that these Betseyville Pauline T-Strap Pumps from would be the perfect accompaniment. The oversized faux leather bow with metal stud detail depicted precisely the edgy and sexy look I was going for. Perfect for a summer wedding in the park among a bunch of musicians.

Except, my invitation never came. And all my friends received theirs. And while, obviously, I am somewhat taken aback at the obvious shun, I have bigger problems: My gorgeous shoes and I now have no plans for that morning.

Brunch, anyone?

Pangs, Polka Dots, and Passover

My grandmother is somewhat legendary in our family stories – known for being fierce, feisty, and just a little bit fear-inducing.

polkadotbetsyShe’s not a cookies and milk kind of grandma. She knows how to eat them, sure, but for the life of her I’m not sure she could figure out how to bake them. Our bonding moments are reading trashy magazines, sex stories, and our shared love of a good tomatillo.

We have other eerie likenesses that I just discovered this week. Her only job ever was as a cosmetics saleswoman…and I’m a beauty editor!

That said, we haven’t been close in years. She lives close to 2,000 miles away, and I’m not so great about keeping in touch. So, imagine my horror when my once clubbing-erotica-reading-soap-loving grandma had grown so weak and frail, she could no longer walk without assistance, and her once signature pink lipstick was gone…replaced by an au naturale face.

She was visitng my parents for Passover, and a few days into her visit, fell and fractured her shoulder. Our short visit will now be longer as she’s sticking around to get rehabitlation – but I wish I could rehab the “me” part of her. The part of her that wore bright shades of violet and knew all the sex triangles on General Hospital.

Tonight I visited her at the rehab center she’ll be in for the next few weeks, and was so sad to see her even further unable to get around. She was in a hospital gown. Myself, though, I was wearing my Betsey Johnson Mariana Sandal – fun and flirty and carefree in a sexy and feminine way. Grandma might not be able to wear them, but I know she approved.

Flower Power (and some not so flowery options, too)

After months of zipping into either black or brown wedge-heeled boots, day in and day out, spring fever for me spells anything but black or brown leather boots! Which is why I’m all too happy to jump on board the printed shoes trend shaping up this season.

Blogger Planet Shoes heralded the graphic wave in a March 18 post: “J Shoes really takes their footwear to a new level. Artistic in design and inspiration, the Lucca is a perfect example of this gorgeous trend.” Other picks? Sam & Libby‘s Zees2 skimmers.

But pretty + pastel doesn’t have to mean dainty ballet flats. Nothing wrong with those, but even Keds — the go-to for squeaky-clean, timeless girly styles, rounds out its offerings with a collection of patterned wedges. The Tracy Reese Wedge features a summery espadrille-style heel and a fabric upper reminiscent of retro upholstery.

Springtime + prints tends to equal florals, which is why a rundown of Betsey Johnson‘s flowery pumps is so fitting. The Shoe Blitz blog touted Johnson’s cork heel and gingham upper Harley Sandal. Zappos carries the Dax, a rose bud print sandal reminiscent of Candie’s iconic pinup mules.

Marciano‘s Firoella gladiator melds a casual boho flat with metallic hardware and elegant watercolor textile straps (the sandals come in a red/navy or black/white color scheme if the Matisse-esque gold/green/cream palette is too much).

But just because prints are big for spring, that doesn’t mean blossoms are all that’s in season.

Madden Girl‘s vampy Balence sandals mix leopard fabric with pink patent straps. And remember Betsey Johnson? Her sassy Neema t-strap takes the animal magnetism one step farther with gold stud accents scattered across the sandal’s straps.
