What Would Dorothy Wear?

IMG_0500What would the Kansas farm girl-turned fashion icon wear today? That’s the question Warner Bros. and Swarovski posed to 19 shoe designers you love (I know you love them, don’t doubt me) and one FIDM design contest winner, Kaddie Lam (pictured with her spiral-heel stiletto). The result? Mouthwatering red confections that would make any modern-day Dorothy want to perfect her yellow brick road strut.

A very chic friend I’m now indebted to was kind enough to take on the role of Shoetube.tv field reporter and sent back pics of her favorites; as displayed last night at Tavern on the Green for The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Emerald Gala.

What’s the fate of these gorgeous creations? They’re being auctioned off here until September 29, with the proceeds going to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, which works in 17 countries to prevent and treat HIV and AIDS.

So if you’ve got the budget, bid away. If you don’t, just click your heels together… or maybe watch the movie. It won’t bring you ruby slippers, but it will bring you back to your shoe-loving roots.

Lattice is the New Cage

While shoe trends come and go with the breakneck pace of El Nino-induced white caps, there is some comfort in the evolution of style. One look, especially much-loved one, has a way of breeding the next generation of trend. Take gladiators: The strappy cute sandals made a huge comeback last summer. Those shoes spawned bondage-y heels and boots with copius buckles and straps. Then came cage heels: still bondage-y, but more refined. And now, the next style down the pipe (according to blogger Shoewawa) is lattice.

“Mesh and weaving is becoming a big hit in the ‘post-cage-shoes’ era,” Shoewawa writes. “It takes a skilled designer to work this look into something that doesn’t end up resembling a grocery bag and there are some shocking examples out there of where some have tried and failed – but here, I’ve found a few that seem to get the look just right.”  (Those include Chanel’s two-tone patent woven boot, Manolo Blahnik‘s mesh heeled shoes, Jeffrey Campbell’s Brazze and L.A.M.B.’s woven peep toe shoe boot.)

Trend-watcher Fashion Style Me also lists the lattice craze among Women’s Shoe Trends for 2010.
Of YSL’s Stefano Pilati, the blogger writes, “These sexy open-trellis weave shoe-boots will re-boot any outfit ready for spring.” And: “This lattice-weave styling is catching on across the fashion spectrum; find them in black & tan & in bold colors too. Women’s glossies are bowled over by the mesh trend, & YSL’s caged ankle-boots [were] Elle magazine’s pick of the month [in the] UK February 2009 edition.”

The Shoe Goddess is on board, remarking, “Stella McCartney always has the perfect way of keeping her designs simple, but making them stand out as well. The netting is super hot, and she too is following in the gladiator trend… This shoe has just made me love a new trend – the basket weave – hot!”

Blogger Suddenly Darling also gives a shout out to lattice/mesh/weaving, reporting, “This season a new breed of boot has emerged, the caged bootie. It’s like a peek-a-boo shoe. Instead of the gladiator lace, these come in mesh and various weaves.”

Cut it Out!

Though few of us turn to health and fitness tomes for our fashion advice, Self Magazine (http://www.self.com/) used its athletic prowess to get a jump on fall trends. In its August issue, the glossy mag lists cut out shoes as a must-have for the coming cooler months.

Though fitness periodicals are rarely the go-to for fashion advice, Self Magazine used its athletic prowess to get a jump on fall trends. In its August issue, the glossy mag lists cut out shoes as a must-have for the coming cooler months.

Urban Outfitters’ recent email newsletter confirmed the trend. The retailer  offers up 10 styles for fall, ranging from edgy-conservative oxfords and flats to lattice heels and wedge boots.

With cage heels and gladiator sandals stocking everyone’s closet all summer, the cut outs are only the slightest of departures from current strappy complexities. Open toed and laser cut, they reveal skin without being sandals; they hint at nudity while also offering support. And style aside, cut outs are a great transitional shoe for the not-so-hot-but-not-yet-cold days ahead. Imagine them with painted toes and tweedy skirts, or with colored opaque tights once the temps dip. Super-cute!

Says blogger Obsessed With Shoes, “This cut out wedge trend isn’t going away any time soon, as evidence by the various designers, both high and low end, making this style for Summer as well as upcoming Fall.”

Web site BecomeGorgeous.com adds, “The suede cut out pumps are just a few of the Manolo Blahnik Fall 2009 shoes worth attention.”

If the highly sculptural and high-end Manolos seem a bit intimidating, turn to the Polyvore blog for advice on how to wear cut outs, and then cruise on over to Polyvore itself, where you can virtual-style your own outfit and test-drive the new look. I’m Feeling Randi, Baby! Yeah!

I love when a shoe makes you feel romantic, nostalgic even. When I saw the Randi pump by L.A.M.B. I immediately transported myself into some sort of classic movie extravaganza full of wistful characters like Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman (Austin Powers didn’t make an appearance, but I just couldn’t help myself with the headline).

This heel’s elegant peep toe and stitched-down ruffles pay tribute to eras past, while the
4 1/2-inch heel keeps things trendy. Sadly, the mysterious, brooding gentleman is sold separately.
Available at Nordstrom.

Tricolor Madness in L.A.M.B.’s Ladonna Heels

lamb-ladonna3Patent leather is still one of the hottest trends of the season, so it stands to reason that your shoe closet should feature at least one eye-catching pair of heels decked out in glossy leather.

Enjoy life in the futuristic lane with these bright red heels balanced with grey and tan trim. The L.A.M.B.’ Ladonna heels are a criss-cross mesh of glossy patent leather that help you step out in luxury and show off that gorgeous pedicure.

The buckles and studs add a vixen-type flair to the mix, and you can enjoy it all atop a 4 ¼” stacked heel. Color and more color is the theme of these beautiful sandals that are sure to turn a few heads; you can balance out your look with a simple tan colored dress or a short denim skirt.

Now that’s haute stuff.

Let The Temptress Run Free in L.A.M.B. Tawny Heels

lamb-tawny3When your ensemble demands a touch of sassiness, it’s high time to you unleashed your inner temptress.

Add some sparkle and shimmer to your step with grey or silver sequins, and you’ll be well no your way.

You can revel in the moonlight and show off your sweet and sassy side with these sequin-speckled delights from L.A.M.B.

The provocative peep-toe heels are perfect for hitting the dance floor like it’s nobody’s business, and the rich leather combined with oversized sequins makes it perfect for any shiny-loving diva looking for attention. If you can complement these heels with a sequin-speckled clutch or miniauderie, more power to you.

The stacked stiletto heel may take a little getting used to, but 4” stacks are manageable. You get some good arch support, but just don’t wear these in the rain or snow; the delicate sequins belong only indoors, so keep these for those truly special occasions – you know, like pageant speeches, wedding receptions, black-tie dinners, that sort of thing.

Devilish Delights for Post-Winter Revelries

lamb-tamika1Holiday season is long gone, but that doesn’t mean we’ve bid adieu to party season. The winter’s end revival period is the perfect time to stock up on the latest Spring fashions and deck out the closet with some fresh and sassy heels.

Case in point: The L.A.M.B. Tamika criss-cross heels designed with bold and bright red straps.

They’re the devil’s colors, you say; the deep red coupled with black straps and a subtle tan embellishment. Indeed they are, and they’re perfect for turning up the heat as we say goodbye to the frigid days of winter.

Turn up the heat on any basic outfit with these 4 ½” stacked heels that will give your gams a serious workout – and start turning a few heads in no time. The leather insole does provide some relief from the pressures of the heels, so you can head off to the night’s events in comfort. The bunched, criss-cross design adds a little style to that step. Plus, it’s an excuse to hike up that skirt just a little this season.
