Winter Foot Safety Tips

It may seem a little odd, in a shoe blog, to write about the dangers of, well, shoes. But, lets face it: We’re all going to be wearing some crazy heels and trendy boots this season. And, of course, our feet will suffer for it.

Shoes.comThe goal is to be gorgeous, and yet be prepared. Winter boots that are made without support can cause your feet to become sore and achy. Most people suffer from foot and leg problems due to the lack arches in winter boots, such as UGGs, which lead to heal spurs and also shin splints. Luckily, Surgical Director of NYC FootCare, Dr. Oliver Zong, gave us some advice.

According to Dr. Zong, proper footwear for icy, slush conditions is a pair of waterproof boots with good traction on the bottom. These will keep you from slipping on the snowy pavement. Here’s some more of his do’s and don’ts:

* Do invest in boots with support and an arch
* Don’t wear boots with heels, to prevent slipping
* Do wear good socks to keep your feet insulated
* Don’t let your toenails go untrimmed
* Do keep your feet as dry as possible to avoid cracking of the skin
* Don’t forget to moisturize the soles and heels of your feet daily
* Do allow your feet to air out between shoe and sock changes

So, good luck. And when you do get that pair of Uggs – cause you know you will – go for a little color and make this trend your own. I’m rocking this adorable purple shade of the Ugg women’s classic tall boot, $179.99, at – how cute are they???

Uggs Out? Discuss.

Just a few weeks ago, I was checking out and stumbled over a Lifestyle entry which brazenly and directly declared that Uggs boots were no longer to be seen on the warm feet of the “in crowd” worldwide. Huffington Post

They were…gasp…out! As in, not cool. Outré. Dorky. Dumb. No longer desirable. About to show up at outlet malls in stores with “Must Go” signs handing across the door in places like Abilene!

Dear lord, is this true? Can these comfortable, cozy Australian exports actually be on their way to exile at the resale shop?

Have the folks declaring them “out” ever slipped a chilly but well pedicured foot into the sheepskin lining then felt the gentle caress Uggs are known for?

Is the name not a subtle way to say ‘hug’ or, gasp…is the name reflective of what some say upon spying them on the gams of a fashionista?

Sigh…keeping up with the latest is sometimes very disheartening. However, I’m going to make a prediction here.

Despite the Huff Post article, and despite the fact Uggs are not waterproof (don’t go there with the ‘boots not waterproof’ thing), Neiman Marcus just days ago emailed a “latest trends” to me, and on the main page was a picture of a certain Uggs.

These were all decorated like a cowboy boot. VERY stylish. Rest easy, ladies. I’ve never known Neimans to steer our tooties in the wrong direction.

So, what do you think? Are Uggs toes up or down?

Soxy Fashion

I don’t know what the weather is like where you are, but where I am, it’s downright cold.

The kind of cold that makes one think twice or three times before crawling out of bed to use the bathroom. The kind of cold that makes one dread getting out of a hot shower, unless you have one of those heated towel bars and most of us don’t.

It’s so cold…how cold is it…t

hat I kept my thick, fleecy white socks on all day long.

Yep, the same ones that I wore to bed last night. Those thick, not so flattering socks that feel like someone is caressing my foot. T

he ones I got as a stocking stuffer, pardon the pun.

Well, I stuffed these stockings into my black leather Aerosoles. The ones with the bows on the toes. Why didn’t I choose a pair of Uggs or those gorgeous leather Italian boots? Frankly, the Uggs aren’t really wearable to a meeting for business, and the Italian boots are eight times more gorgeous than they are comfortable.

Sure, I’m short, but do I really need to wear a 3-inch heel? Not today.

So I ventured out to a meeting with black pants, my fluffy white socks and my adorable lighter than air Aerosoles, looking like my ankles were twice their normal size and not giving one wit because, folks, my feet were warm.

Valentine in a Size 9

I’m a sucker for Hallmark Holidays… especially Valentine’s Day. There is nothing better than devoting a day to that special someone in your life. There is also nothing worse than breaking up with that special someone just days before the most romantic day of the year.

In fact, I feel like I can’t escape the constant reminder that love is in the air. I feel bombarded by giant heart shaped boxes of chocolates, greeting cards with mushy messages, bouquets of red roses and happy couples secretly mocking me with their blissful smiles.

Okay, I might’ve made that last one up.

So what’s a broken-hearted girl to do?

Well, I can count on my best friends for the chocolates, my mom for the mushy card and my dad for the roses.

As for the happy couples, they will be too jealous of my foot candy to notice my lack of arm candy.

That’s right – I’m taking all the money I would’ve spent on my ex and I’m buying the sexiest shoes I can find. And then I’m buying another pair! There has never been a more appropriate time in my life to splurge on well, ME.

Besides, I have a ton of Valentine’s in my life who have never let me down: Steve Madden, BCBG, Nine West, Pumas, Reefs… and if I had to choose one true shoe love, it would have to be my chocolate brown ultra-tall suede Uggs, with furry sheep skin at the top and leather lace-ups.

They keep me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside (literally).
